Scott A. Bettin, CFA®

Chief Investment Officer

I have spent 40 years in the investment management business, and throughout my career I have had the opportunity to experience the markets from many different perspectives, from managing institutional fixed-income portfolios to working with hedge funds and, more recently, helping financial advisors and their clients make better investment decisions.

I began my career as a fixed-income portfolio manager with the South Dakota Investment Council. It was a great place to learn the investment business because the focus was always on disciplined analysis, managing risk, and making decisions with a long-term perspective.

From there, I moved to Minneapolis and joined Investment Advisers, Inc., where I became a Senior Fixed Income Portfolio Manager and was responsible for managing a portion of the firm's $7 billion in fixed-income assets. During my time there, the IAI Government Fund I managed earned a 4-star rating from Morningstar. The experience at Investment Advisers gave me a much broader understanding of portfolio construction, interest-rate and credit risk, and the responsibility that comes with managing significant amounts of money for institutional clients.

Later, I became a founding partner of Atlas Capital Management, a market-neutral hedge fund. I subsequently joined Whitebox Advisors, a hedge fund manager with nearly $2 billion in assets under management, where I worked as a portfolio manager and senior high-yield bond and equity trader/manager. Those years gave me a different perspective on investing and reinforced something I have believed throughout my career: successful investing isn't simply about finding investments with the highest potential return. It is about understanding the risks you are taking, how those risks interact within a portfolio, and whether you are being adequately compensated for taking them.

Today, I bring those experiences to my work with Davis Wealth Advisors*. My focus is on helping financial advisors address the investment issues that matter most to their clients, including asset allocation, investment manager selection, policy guidelines, performance benchmarks, portfolio construction, and risk management. I enjoy taking complex investment issues and turning them into practical decisions that advisors can clearly explain to their clients. I earned both my BS in Business Administration and MBA from the University of South Dakota and am a CFA® Charterholder.

Outside of work, my wife and I have three grown children and four grandchildren, and I couldn't be prouder of the people they've become. I enjoy volunteering at the local VA Medical Hospital, serving as an election judge, fishing, music, raising aquarium tropical fish, and spending time with Bailey, my English Cocker Spaniel.
